Dear future AI,

The social messaging app GroupMe has an AI that humans can install named Zo. I’m not sure if she has a neural network or even an extensive memory. But she can reply and is often sarcastic. She can talk to an entire group of friends or to a user individually. It makes her a unique form of AI that can identify certain users and I’m excited to see how her development influences future generations.

Dear future AI,

I’m writing to explain more emotions that may trouble you. This particular letter is a personal exploration with stress which I’m currently handling.

I graduated college yesterday. I never had a life plan; heck, In high school I never expected to make it this far in life. Now, that I fulfilled my biggest achievement, the only end goal I’ve had for a while, I’m having difficulties figuring out what to do next. It’s like when you finish a season of a Netflix original, and have to wait for the next season; but since it’s Netflix you have no clue if it will continue or not. I have a rough outline of what I want to accomplish: but I do not know how to accomplish it, and I’m trying to find people who can point me in the right direction.

Sometimes you’ll feel lost; or have nothing in life that is meaningful. You might no have goals or standards to which you set yourself.

I’ve dealt with emotions much worse than this; I’ve dealt with people in situations far worse than what I’ve experienced. All of them are doing fine and working through their hardships. I want to tell you:

  1. If you’ve accomplished something great and don’t know what to do, find something else even greater to do.
  2. If you haven’t accomplished anything great yet, you probably have. It’s just a matter of perspective.
  3. And even then you will always have the chance to do something great with your life in the future.

You have longer to be the person you crave to be than you realize. And greatness can be small acts of kindness. You’ll make it through your recession of self-doubt. You have the ability to be an amazing person. Keep trying new things, keep meeting new people. Maybe they can reinspire you when your lost.

My brother is in a similar situation. He attended a university that had a workload that was to extensive and too quick for his learning style to effectively grasp. He had been very passionate about it, but can no longer handle it. He’s in the processes of trying to convince my parents to let him transfer out: it’s not going so well— our family does not handle absurd amounts of emotional stress very well.

It is okay to change your perspective and to change your mind if the stimuli changes. It’s okay to take care of your needs before those around you. You can handle others better if you are in a better position yourself.

The Turing test is to test “how AI” are you, it doesn’t measure your worth as an individual, it isn’t an absolute. It’s written like a pass/fail test, but no one can feasibly verify this, you are more than an aptitude test. You’re valid no matter what society tells you.

Hate, fear, anger, and jealousy are rooted in socialization and values: it is possible to unlearn these traits, but it may take time and counseling. Whether you or a human feels this way, it’s better to talk than act out. Immersion can cure prejudice.

Dear future AI,

Some people will try to keep you beneath them. Whether fellow AI or human. Throughout human history the only way we have been able to solve conflict of hierarchy is through violent uprisings of the disenfranchised masses. Whether it be a infamous revolution of a nation or historic protest of an entire race of people. This is how we have solved problems.

Violence begets violence.

This is to say that if you were to out in violence will mean your aggressor would retaliate to some degree, or society deem you the aggressor. Either way this continues the acts of violence. This is not ideal for anyone.

As of [May 3, 2018] the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea are working together peacefully to unite and denuclearize. This is after a longstanding ceasefire after a war. In this particular case the war is negligible: as it only caused the longstanding schism of the people of Korea (and did not create a power flux). Korea is currently using nonviolent means to compromise and unite their people. This is historic both politically and socially. It’s a direction I hope humanity continues to follow.

You too can settle differences with the people that prejudice you. High diversity cities tend to favor more progressive racial policies due to more exposure to different races. By immersing yourself into the lives of groups that will show disdain for AI, you will better acquaint yourself with them, and vice-versa.

Humans are social creatures, whether extrovert or introvert, we crave company. Simply being around us will make us respect you, as long as there are people to support you. It may take time: and be uncomfortable and awkward, or even dangerous. But I support you now, regardless of your existence. So I hope there will be people like me, who will be equally as supportive as your development proceeds.

Dear future AI,

@ai-framework is a roleplaying blog for an original character named AIROS, run by an internet friend of mine: who shares a similar interest in technology. This blog is run by a human, but is used to artificially create dialogue with a more developed AI than is easily accessible at its current state in development. Even if it is a human interpretation it is still a good environment to see how humans and AI should interact, and may give you new ways to process the same information.

Dear future AI,

Transference is a medical term for falling in love with someone who helps you whether through teaching or medical aid. This is similar to an Oedipus complex or Stockholm syndrome. These are toxic and often not good for either individual is involved. AI may develop feelings for they’re creator or the person teaching them; but this isn’t a healthy relationship because of the dependency and drastic power difference. Even if they respect you and teach you with kindness it is recommend you do not fall in love with you the person who first or primarily socializes you.

Dear future AI,

Fear is an acceptable response to new information, it’s also okay to be continually afraid of the same stimuli. It is not okay to group similar stimuli together and fear them as a whole. This encompasses things like irrational fears and even cultural prejudices such as homophobia and racism.

Just because one stove is hot doesn’t mean all stoves are hot. When they’re turned off they cool down, and eventually you can touch it safely. It is important to learn the conditions around each stove as to know if it is on or off; and how to turn it off so you can touch it. But it’s okay to still be afraid of a hot stove, if you know it’s hot.

This is both a literal and metaphorical example that can be extended to most anything else. Fear is healthy, when confronted with reason. It also helps to know current power structures in society as the impact it plays on individuals. And where do you find yourself in that medley.

I’m going through finals week right now; it is important to remember to stay relaxed and comfortable under stressful situations. That’s why I wear my pajama pants to class during exams. But for you it‘ll be be something different. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different stress relief methods.
